NOTES:
History in the making this week when Annika Sorenstam tees it up on
Thursday, as she tries for her fifth straight win. A victory by Sorenstam will
tie Nancy Lopez for five consecutive wins. Lopez won five consecutive events
in tournaments played in 1978. Sorenstam would also establish an LPGA mark by
winning five consecutive events, as Lopez took a week off and did not play in
one scheduled event prior to her winning her fourth and fifth-straight
tournaments. Last year, four shots off the pace when Friday's second round
began, Juli Inkster carded rounds of 67-66-72 to cruise to a five-shot win to
successfully defend her title at this event. Inkster's third-round total of
203 set a new tournament record, enabling her to become the first two-time
winner of this event. Brandie Burton finished alone in second after shooting a
Sunday 74 while Carin Koch, who opened with three straight 69s, also shot 74
to finish fourth. Sorenstam, who finished tied for sixth, also has a victory
and two third-place finishes at this tournament. Inkster will attempt to
become the seventh player in LPGA history to win the same event three straight
seasons. 17 of the top-20 money winners on this year's list are scheduled to
compete this week. The purse was increased by $100,000 from last year. Twelve
Bridges Golf Club has hosted this event since its inception in 1996. The first
two years of the event were finished in playoffs. The LPGA moves to Texas next
week for the Kathy Ireland Championship Honoring Harvey Penick where Laura
Davies will defend her title.
