NOTES:
Four shots off the pace when Sunday's final round began, Rob McKelvey carded
a four-under 68 to post a one-shot win over Ian Leggatt and third-round
leader Guy Hill for his first career win. Leggatt carded a Sunday 67 while
Hill stumbled home with a one-over 73. McKelvey will be attempting to do
what no one has ever done on the BUY.COM TOUR -- successfully defend a
title. And only two players have won the same tournament twice in the 11-
year history of the BUY.COM TOUR. Chris Smith captured the 1995 and 1997
Dakota Dunes Opens and Ryan Howison won the 1997 and 1999 Lakeland
Classics.
The par-4, 452-yard 13th hole was the most difficult hole on the course for
the eighth consecutive season. After ranking as the toughest hole on the
TOUR for the last two years (and in 1994), the "Gator's Jaw" as it's known
in Louisiana, dropped to the fourth most difficult on TOUR with a stroke
average of 4.482. The hole allowed 26 birdies, 104 bogeys and 54 others. The
1996 winner of this tournament, Paul Stankowski became the first player to
win a BUY.COM Tour and PGA Tour event in the same year when he
accomplished
the feat in consecutive weeks, winning the Louisiana Open and then the
BellSouth Classic. This event is one of the few BUY.COM Tour stops to never
require a playoff to determine its champion. The Louisiana Open is the third
of 29 official events on the BUY.COM TOUR. John Kernohan registered the
first ace at the Louisiana Open since 1998 last year when he used a 6-iron
from 183 yards on the third hole. It was the fifth hole-in-one in the nine-
year history of the event and the second on hole No. 3. Only two of the
previous nine winners of the Louisiana Open have finished in the Top 15 on
the money list to advance to the PGA TOUR the following year. Joe Daley
finished 11th in 1997, while Matt Gogel occupied the seventh spot on
the 1999 money list. The BUY.COM Monterrey Open is the only tournament that
has been around for at least five of the 11 years that can say that every
one of its winners has graduated to the PGA TOUR the following season. With
the win last year, McKelvey became the all-time leading money winner at this
event with $100,768 in earnings. R.W. Eaks ranks second followed by John
Wilson, Joe Daley and Matt Gogel. Le Triomphe CC ranked as the fourth
toughest course during the 2000 BUY.COM season, however four players
recorded two eagles in the same round at last year's event. The four players
were Leggatt, Mark Hensby, Sam Randolph and Emlyn Aubrey. A total of 42
players recorded double eagles on the BUY.COM Tour last year. Only two
players in the history of this event have recorded four rounds in the 60's
during the event -- Paul Stankowski and Joe Durant. John Wilson has fared
the best of all returning champions with a tie for 14th in 1999. Following
the BUY.COM Louisiana Open, the TOUR heads to Hot Springs, Ark. for the
first-ever BUY.COM Arkansas Classic (April 16-22).
