NOTES:
Niclas Fasth led from start to finish to become the fourth
Swedish winner of this event in the last eight years, as he registered
his first career win. Despite a final round of 73, Fasth defeated Ross
Drummond, Mark Davis and Richard S Johnson by two shots. Fasth started
the day with a two-shot lead over Jim Payne, but he pulled away with
two birdies from the 10th and despite two bogeys in the last seven
holes, he still managed to post the win. Payne struggled with a six-
over 78 to tie for 14th. Fasth will try to become the first player to
post back-to-back wins at this event. Mats Lanner is the only two-
time winner of this tournament, capturing the title in 1994 and 1998.
This is the fifth straight year in which Santo da Serra has hosted
this tournament. The golf course is perched 2,300 feet above sea level
and its beauty is enhanced by many spectacular views over the adjacent
Atlantic Ocean. The European Tour moves to South America for two
events over the next couple of weeks. Next week the players will be
competing in the second annual Sao Paulo Brazil Open where Padraig
Harrington posted the victory last year and the following week the
event is the Open de Argentina in Buenos Aires. Most of the top
European players are competing this week at the Bay Hill Invitational
on the PGA Tour.
