Campbell in race for Title

Michael Campbell who chose to play in Kuala Lumpur this week rather than defend his Australian Masters title, gave scant comfort to the rest of the field adding a 67 to his opening 69 for an eight under par halfway total of 136. Despite this scoring the New Zealander apparently offered some serious appearance money, said " My game was only at 65-70% capacity. There is much more to come".

Conditions were hot and humid all day and for the 2nd day running a violent thunderstorm ended play early with 66 players still out on the course. Play will resume early on Saturday for the 2nd round to be completed and then the 3rd round will start with those players making the cut.

Campbell was left with a 2 shot lead at the end of play. Ireland's Padraig Harrington was six under with four holes to play, while New Zealander Elliot Boult was in the clubhouse with a 66, best round of the tournament so far, also on 4 under.

Campbell eagled the first hole - his 10th - when he holed from 93 yards with a sand wedge.

This was Campbell's second holing out from a full shot in 24 hours after also pitching in for an eagle on the fourth on Thursday.

The New Zealander said: "Holing two shots within 24 hours is unheard of for me, it's unbelievable. Again I didn't see it go in but apparently it span back from about six feet.

"I didn't play that well to be honest. There were a few good birdie putts, but little besides that. If you take away the two shots I've holed it's not really that good but I'm not complaining.

Masters Champion Vijay Singh was one of six players a shot further back on five under with two holes of his round to play.

Former Open Champion John Daly, despite dropping three shots in the last four holes, looked safe to make the cut after carding a second successive 72.
