NOTES:
Fiji's Vijay Singh looks to become only the third player in tournament history
to successfully repeat as champion, as he begins his title defense on
Thursday. Jack Nicklaus became the first player at The Masters to win
back-to-back, accomplishing the feat in 1965-66, and Nick Faldo turned the
trick in 1989-90. One shot off the pace after two rounds, Singh carded a
third-round 70 to take a four shot lead over David Duval and then finished his
impressive tournament with a three-under 69 to post a three-shot win over
Ernie Els. Singh's three-stroke margin was the largest since 1997 when Tiger
Woods captured his first major by 12 shots. Singh was the only player in the
field to post four rounds of par or better (72-67-70-69) and topped off his
second "major" victory with an 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole.
Second-round leader Duval finished tied for third with Loren Roberts while
world number-one Woods finished alone in fifth. International players have
fared well at The Masters, winning nine of the last 13 and 11 of the last 18.
No player has ever won The Masters after winning the par-three tournament held
on Wednesday prior to the tournament. Last year, Chris Perry captured the
par-3 event in a four-man playoff and finished tied for 14th. This is the
first "major" on the PGA Tour this season. A total of 101 players have been
invited to this year's event, with a total of 94 expected to compete. The
field includes 18 first-time players and five amateurs. Qualifications for
entrance into the Masters are: past Masters champions, U.S. Open, British Open
and PGA Champions (Honorary, non-competing after five years), winners of the
last three Players Championships, current U.S. Amateur and British Amateur
champion, current U.S. Amateur Public Links and U.S. Mid-Amateur champion, the
top-16 finishers -- including ties from last year's Masters, top-8 players --
including ties from last year's U.S. Open, top-4 players -- including ties
from last year's PGA Championship and British Open, the top-40 money leaders
from last year, the three leaders on the current year Official PGA Tour money
list published during the fourth week prior to the Masters, the top-50 leaders
on last year's Golf Rankings and the current top-50 leaders in the World Golf
Rankings published during the fourth week prior to the current Masters. The
committee can also invite any international player not otherwise qualified.
There are four PGA Tour winners during the past year who will not be competing
in this year's Masters: Billy Andrade, Jim Carter, Michael Clark and Garrett
Willis. There are three players in the field with at least five starts who
have never missed the cut: Fred Couples (16), John Huston (11) and Jim Furyk
(5). Bernhard Langer owns the longest current consecutive cut streak with 17
straight. Tom Watson has made the cut 22 of the last 26 years. Arnold Palmer
has missed the cut 17 consecutive times. Sam Snead owns the record for most
consecutive cuts made at 24, followed by Byron Nelson and Watson at 22. There
have been 14 holes-in-one at the Masters, the last in 1996 when Ray Floyd aced
the 16th hole. There have been only four wire-to-wire winners of the Masters:
Craig Wood (1941), Arnold Palmer (1960), Jack Nicklaus (1972) and Ray Floyd
(1976). Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most eagles in the Masters with 24,
while Jose Maria Olazabal holds the record for most birdies in a single
Masters tournament with 24. Arnold Palmer will be making his 47th consecutive
start at the Masters. Nicklaus has made the cut in 37 of 41 Masters starts.
Four players have won the Masters for their only top-10 finish in Augusta:
George Archer, Sandy Lyle, Ian Woosnam and Singh. There have been only three
first-time winners, Fuzzy Zoeller (1979), Gene Sarazen (1935) and Horton Smith
(1934). Only three players in the history of the Masters have birdied the
final hole for the win: Arnold Palmer (1960), Sandy Lyle (1988) and Mark
O'Meara (1998). Both Palmer and O'Meara birdied the final two holes for the
win. The Masters is the only major played on the same course each year. This
year's purse will be announced later in the week. The PGA Tour moves to South
Carolina for the WORLDCOM Classic, where Stewart Cink will defend his title.
