DiMarco takes early lead with 65
Chris DiMarco
fired a seven- under-par 65 for a one-shot lead in Thursday's opening
round of The Masters, the first major championship of the 2001 season.
Steve Stricker and Argentina's Angel Cabrera share second after
each shot six-under 66s, while Phil Mickelson, Lee Janzen and John
Huston are two back at minus-five.
The 32-year-old
DiMarco, who captured last year's Pennsylvania Classic for his breakthrough
victory on the PGA Tour, is making his first appearance at Augusta
National. His opening 65 was one shot off the Masters' rookie first-round
record of 64 established by Lloyd Mangrum in 1940 and matched by
Mike Donald in 1990.
Twenty-three-year-old
James Driscoll was the low amateur in the field after carding a
four-under 68. The 2000 U.S. Amateur runner-up finished the day
tied for seventh with Chris Perry, Kirk Triplett and Spain's Miguel
Angel Jimenez.
Defending champion
Vijay Singh is alongside Scott Verplank, Jim Furyk and 1998 Masters
champ Mark O'Meara at three-under, while Tiger Woods, who is looking
to become the first player to win all four professional majors consecutively,
collected four birdies and two bogeys to finish the day seven off
the pace with a 70.
Woods, who
compiled a record total of 270 on his way to a 12-shot win here
in 1997, the had a chance at his third straight round in the 60s
at Augusta but left a 12-foot birdie try at the final hole three
feet short.

DiMarco rolled
in a 10-foot birdie putt at the short but difficult par-three 12th
to take an early two-shot lead. He continued to play well around
Amen Corner with a birdie at the par-five 13th, and took a four-shot
advantage into the clubhouse after adding a birdie at the par-five
15th.
"It was a great
day. That's all I can say," said the 32-year-old DiMarco, who played
the famed course for the first time on Monday. "I'm scoring well
right now and playing well right now, and I did everything the right
way today and hopefully I can carry that over."
DiMarco collected
his first birdie at the par-five second, but slipped back to even
with his lone bogey of the round at the third. He quickly surged
to three-under with birdies at the fifth, sixth and seventh, then
made the turn at four-under 32 after a four-foot birdie at the ninth.
Australia's
Greg Chalmers, another player making his Masters debut, hit a spectator
in the head with his drive left of the fairway off the first tee.
"I was a little
nervous at the start and it wasn't helped by the fact that I clocked
some guy on the forehead," said Chalmers, who went on to strike
another man in the shoulder with his second shot and walked off
the opening green with a bogey.
Chalmers finished
the day at four-over with a 76.
