NOTES:
Tied for the lead at the halfway point with Frank Lickliter, Loren
Roberts carded weekend rounds of 63-66 to cruise to an eight-shot win and set
a new tournament record in the process. Roberts' total of 260 broke the
previous mark of 264 set in 1999 by Carlos Franco. Roberts, who shot four
rounds in the 60's, defeated Franklin Langham who shot a final round 72 after
trailing by just two with one round to play. Roberts also equaled the 54-hole
mark of 194 set by Jesper Parnevik in 1996, the year in which Roberts won his
first Milwaukee Open. During the last seven years, Roberts has two wins and
two runner-up finishes. Roberts has appeared in the last 18 Greater Milwaukee
Opens. One of five two-time winners at this event, Roberts tops the
tournament's all-time money list with earnings of $962,278. Since the event's
move to Brown Deer Park Golf Course seven years ago, Roberts has finished in
the top-2 four times, winning in 1996 and 2000 and finishing second in 1994
and 1997. He is a cumulative 91-under-par at Brown Deer Park, 27 shots better
than Scott Hoch, who, with a cumulative mark of 64-under-par, is the only
other player to make all seven cuts since 1994. The purse was increased by
$600,000 from last year. This is the eighth straight year in which Brown Deer
Park will be hosting the event. For 21 years (1973-93), this event was played
at the Tuckaway Country Club in Franklin, Wisconsin. Ed Sneed is the only
wire-to-wire winner of this event (1974). No player has ever won this event
two straight years. Tiger Woods, who is taking the week off as he prepares for
the British Open, made his professional debut in 1996 at this tourney,
finishing tied for 60th. Only five of the top-30 money leaders are competing
this week. This event serves as the final tune-up for next week's British Open
where Woods will defend his title at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club.
