NOTES:
World number-one Karrie Webb led from start to finish, cruising to a 10-shot
win over defending champion Dottie Pepper, as she captured her second
career "major" title. Webb, the only player in the field to break par in
all four rounds, led by only three at the halfway point over Pepper, but
a third-round 67 put her eight clear of the 1999 champ. A final round of
70 completed the impressive victory. Pepper, a two-time winner of this
event, opened with a 68, but finished with three straight 72's. 1999 runner-up
Meg Mallon, finished alone in third for her third top-five finish at this
event in the last five years. With the win, Webb became the sixth wire-to-wire
and first since Pat Hurst in 1998. Other players to accomplish that feat are:
Amy Alcott in 1991, Juli Inkster in 1989, Sandra Post in 1978 and Sandra
Palmer in 1975. 13-year old amateur Aree Song Wongluekiet was the low amateur
in the field last year, tying for 10th while her sister Naree missed the cut.
Aree's finish was the best ever by an amateur. Both Naree and Aree are in this
year's field along with three other amateur's: Lorena Ochoa, Leigh Anne Hardin
and Lisa Ferrero. Nine past champions are in the field this year: Alcott,
Betsy King, Pepper, Helen Alfredsson, Juli Inkster, Nanci Bowen, Pat Hurst,
Nancy Lopez and Patty Sheehan. When Pepper captured the event in 1999, she
set an LPGA record for the lowest under-par score for a major when she
finished at 19-under par.During the four days, Pepper had two eagles, 19
birdies and just four bogeys. The purse was increased by $250,000 from last
year. This is the first "major" on the LPGA Tour. The next major is the U.S.
Open the first week of June. Webb has won three of the last five majors and
has five top-10's in the last five. Webb recorded her second career
hole-in-one during last year's final round when she aced the fifth hole.
Sandra Post is the only player to win this event two straight years,
accomplishing the feat in 1978-79. The Nabisco Championship was designated
as one of the LPGA Tour's four major championships in 1983. This event was
formerly called the Colgate Dinah Shore (1972-81) and the Nabisco Dinah
Shore (1982-99). Betsy King and Amy Alcott are the only three-time winners
of this tournament while Juli Inkster and Pepper have won it twice. The
LPGA Tour remains in California for the City of Hope LPGA Classic hosted
by Amy Alcott, April 12-14 in Los Angeles where Grace Park will defend her
title.
