NOTES:
Tied for the lead with Dana Quigley after two rounds, Doug Tewell used
an eagle three on the par-5 17th to propel him to a two-shot win over Gil
Morgan and capture last year's event. Morgan, who was tied with Tewell after
16 holes, could only birdie 17 when his eagle putt from 14-feet missed and
then suffered a bogey on 18. Quigley, the 1999 runner-up, slipped to a final
round of 71 to tie for fourth. Dave Stockton has enjoyed great success at this
tournament. In eight starts, he has five top-10 finishes, including wins in
1993 and 1997. Stockton's three other top-10 finishes: 2nd/1994;
T2/1995; T10/1998. He has earned $372,326, the most of any player who has
competed at the event. The late Jack Kiefer also had five top-10 finishes.
Of Stockton's 24 rounds at Park Meadows CC, 22 have been under par, with
13 of those rounds being in the 60s. His scoring average at the event is
69.00. Gil Morgan is second to Stockton in earnings with $342,400. For the
third sraight year the purse was increased, this time by $50,000 from last
year. Miller Barber is the only player to win this event two consecutive years
(1987-88). Dave Stockton and Barber are the only two-time winners of this
event. Park Meadows has been the site for this event the last eight years.
Jeremy Ranch Golf Club hosted the event the first 11 years. There have been
four holes-in-one at the event. Billy Casper and Joe Jimenez each had one
at Jeremy Ranch in 1991, while Al Kelley (#16/Rd. 1/1994) and Tony Jacklin
(#4/Final Rd./1997) had them at Park Meadows. Once again, hole #14 was the
toughest at last year's event with an average score of 3.371 or .371 over par.
That made it the 12th most difficult hole on the SENIOR TOUR last year. It
was also the fourth toughest par-3 hole on the SENIOR TOUR. The easiest was
#17 with an average score of 4.392 or .608 under par. That made it the fourth
easiest hole on the SENIOR PGA TOUR in 2000. The Park Meadows CC ranked
28th out of 38 courses on the SENIOR TOUR in 2000 with an average score of
71.513. Since 1997, every champion has posted all three rounds in the 60's on
his way to victory. The last player to post a round of 70 or higher was
Graham Marsh, who opened with a 70 in 1996. Miller Barber and Dale Douglass
share the distinction of posting the best come-from-behind wins in tournament
history. Each came from four strokes behind to win. Barber overtook Ben Smith
and Douglass passed Charles Coody. The last three winners of this event have
all had ties to the state of Oklahoma. Gil Morgan, the 1998 champion, is a
native of Wewoka who resides in Edmond, while 1999 winner Dave Eichelberger
attended Oklahoma State, the same school that produced last year's winner
Doug Tewell, who also makes his home in Edmond. Next week the Senior Tour
moves to Ontario for the Canada Senior Open Championship where Tom Jenkins
will defend his title.
