NOTES:
One shot off the pace heading into the weekend rounds, Massimo Scarpa
carded 18-hole marks of 68-70 to defeat Mikael Lundberg by one shot and
captured his first career European Tour title. Scarpa's total of 275 broke the
previous tournament record of 276 set by countryman Costantino Rocca in 1999.
Tied for the lead after a fourth-hole bogey, Scarpa birdied the sixth and then
moved closer to victory with an eagle on 13 and a birdie on 14. Lundberg had a
chance to catch Scarpa after the leader bogeyed 17, but Lundberg also suffered
a bogey on the same hole and finished one back. This event combines players
from the main European Tour and the European Challenge Tour. Most of the top
European players are competing this week in the United States at the PGA
Championship in Duluth, Georgia. Tiger Woods is the defending champion at this
year's venue -- the Atlanta Athletic Club. Next week the European Tour moves
to Scotland for the Scottish PGA Championship at Gleneagles. Also on tap is
the WGC - NEC Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. Woods won
last year at the NEC while Pierre Fulke was the winner at Gleneagles.
