 NOTES:
David Berganio, Jr. fashioned a five-under 67 to force a playoff with
Ahmad Bateman and then parred the second extra hole to earn his third career
BUY.COM Tour victory. The win helped Berganio advance to the PGA Tour as he
finished the 2000 season 11th on the money list. So far in 2001, Berganio has
competed in 18 PGA Tour events with 11 cuts made and three top-10 finishes.
Berganio, who will not be on hand to defend his title, is ranked 66th on the
PGA money list. Bateman despite his runner-up finish, set a BUY.COM Tour
record with 28 birdies throughout the tournament, breaking the old mark of 27
held by a number of players, the last being Vance Veazey at the 2000 BUY.COM
Upstate Classic. Both players had chances to win the event without overtime,
as Berganio missed a three-foot par putt on the final hole and Bateman's six-
foot birdie attempt missed its mark. After both players parred the first
playoff hole, they each had birdie attempts on the second hole, Bateman from
60-feet and Berganio from 20. Bateman's birdie attempt finished six-feet from
the hole and he missed his par attempt while Berganio's putt finished 3 1/2-
feet away and he made the putt for the win. The purse was increased by $25,000
from last year. This is the sixth year of the event, all hosted by The
Champions Club. The par-4, 471-yard 15th hole was the most difficult at last
year's event and the 26th most difficult on TOUR with a stroke average of
4.340. The most difficult on the TOUR was the par-4 17th hole at The Links at
Yankee Trace in Dayton, Ohio. That hole played to a 4.631 stroke average
during the 2000 Dayton Open. Chris Couch recorded the first hole-in-one since
1997 with his ace on the eighth hole during round four of the 2000 event. The
only other hole-in-one on The Champions Club course also came on the eighth
hole and was posted by Steve Novarro during round one of the 1997 tournament.
In the five years this tournament has been held, Chris Smith (1997) is the
only winner who has gone wire-to-wire to capture the Omaha Classic. The last
player on the TOUR to win wire-to-wire was Brett Quigley at the 2001 Arkansas
Classic in April. In the five years that the Omaha Classic has been held, two
of the nine players who either held or shared the lead going into the final
round went on to win the tournament. Chris Smith (1997) held the lead by
himself, while Mathew Goggin shared the third-round lead in 1999 before
winning by four strokes. In 1996, 1998 and 2000, two players shared the third-
round lead and none of the six were able to walk away with a victory. The
BUY.COM Tour moves to Arkansas next week for the Fort Smith Classic at
Hardscrabble Country Club where Tim Clark is the defending champion.
