Early tee off for Tiger Woods

Defending champion Tiger Woods will have an early tee time for Thursday's opening round of the British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes Golf Club.

Woods, who won last year's event at St. Andrews by eight shots over Ernie Els and Thomas Bjorn, will play in a group with Angel Cabrera of Argentina and Thomas Levet of France. The trio will tee off at 9:01 a.m. local time (4:01 a.m. et). Woods' group will be the 12th to tee off on Thursday. On Friday, his group will tee off at 1:47 p.m. local time.

Last year, Woods became only the fifth golfer in history - and the youngest - to complete the Grand Slam by winning all four majors. He went on to win the U.S. PGA Championship and earlier this year at the Masters, Woods became the first player to hold all four major titles simultaneously.

Woods was still an amateur in 1996 when the British Open was last played at Royal Lytham & St Annes. He tied for 22nd in that event.

Tom Lehman, who won the title in 1996, will play in a group with Robert Karlsson of Sweden and Jose Coceres of Spain on Thursday and Friday.

Since Lehman's victory, 14 bunkers have been added to the course, bringing the total to 196. Several alterations were made to other holes and many poplar trees were removed from the course.

Lehman's best finish this year was second at the Sony Open in Hawaii in January. He hasn't won an event on the PGA Tour since January of 2000 at the Phoenix Open.

South African Retief Goosen, bidding to become the first European Tour member since Tony Jacklin more than 30 years ago to win the U.S. and British Opens in the same year, will tee off with Frank Lickliter and Barry Lane just after 1 p.m. local time Thursday.

Goosen, who last month won the U.S. Open by defeating Mark Brooks in an 18- hole playoff, is one of the biggest international attractions in the 156- player field. Goosen warmed up for this event by winning the Scottish Open at Loch Lomond last week.

Els, whose best-ever finish at the British Open came last year, will tee off with Dudley Hart and Ian Woosnam. Els finished in a tie for sixth at The Masters earlier this year and his only major titles came at the U.S. Open in 1994 and '97.

David Duval also has an early tee time Thursday, as he plays with Steve Elkington and Jose Maria Olazabal. Duval equaled his best performance at a British Open last year, tying for 11th place. Since tying for sixth at the British Open in 1995, Elkington has missed the cut three times and last year tied for 60th. Olazabal's best result at the British Open was in 2000 when he tied for fourth. He missed the cut from 1997-99.

Vijay Singh has the honors of playing with five-time British Open winner Tom Watson Thursday and Friday. Both are in a group with 21-year-old Australian Adam Scott.

John Daly, the 1995 British Open winner, will tee off at 12:30, just before Phil Mickelson's group. Daly tied for third at last week's Scottish Open. He's missed the cut in his last two trips to the British Open in 1998 and 2000.

Gary Player will participate in his final British Open. The 65-year-old first won a British Open in 1959 and added two more titles (1968, 1974). He will tee off in the morning with David Toms and Paul Lawrie.
