Van de Velde makes it
through qualifying
Jan Van de Velde, who blew
a three-shot lead on the final hole of the 1999 British Open and lost in a playoff,
has qualified for this year's championship, which begins Thursday at Royal Lytham
and St. Annes.
Van de Velde posted rounds
of 70 and 68 over the past two days at the par-72 Southport and Ainsdale course
to earn his way into the field.
The Frenchman is remembered
for his collapse two years ago at Carnoustie when he carded a triple-bogey seven
at the finishing hole to fall into a three-way playoff that Paul Lawrie eventually
won.
Greg Turner of New Zealand
was the low qualifier among the eight that made the field from Southport and Ainsdale.
Another notable qualifier
was American Jeff Maggert, who shot rounds of 69 and 65 at the par-72 St. Annes
Old Links course.
However, a number of notable
names failed to earn spots in this week's field.
European Ryder Cup captain
Sam Torrance shot rounds of 68 and 71 at St. Annes to miss the cut by three shots,
while former Ryder Cup captain Mark James missed by three shots in the Hillside
qualifier. Italy's Costantino Rocca, the runner-up to John Daly in the 1995 Open,
missed this year's field by three shots in the Fairhaven qualifier.
