Only 7 pars for up and
down Mickelson
Phil Mickelson had one of the more up-and-down
first rounds at the British Open on Thursday, a one-under par 70 that included
back-to-back eagles and only seven pars.
After five holes, the American left-hander
was at two-over par after three bogeys, a par and a birdie.
But the world number two moved back
to level with a three at the 494-yard par-five sixth and leapt to two-under when
he chipped in for another eagle at the 557-yard par five seventh, the longest
hole on the course.
He then finally managed two pars in
a row to turn in 33, but the roller coaster ride continued on the back nine as
the first four holes yielded two more birdies and two bogeys.
He finally settled down, dropping just
one shot over the closing five holes.
