NOTES:
Kevin Johnson opened with back-to-back 64's and closed with two straight
70's to post a three shot win over Mark Hensby and record his third career
BUY.COM Tour win. The victory helped enable Johnson to advance to the PGA
Tour where his has competed in 24 events and has made 14 cuts. Johnson's best
finish this year is a tie for 11th at the Bob Hope Classic and ranks 153rd on
the money list. Johnson's 36-hole total of 128 is a tournament record while
his 198 mark after three rounds equaled the mark set by Dicky Thompson in
1999. In a battle with Guy Boros and Todd Barranger in the final round,
Johnson took control with birdies on 13, 14 and 15 to seal the deal. Boros and
Barranger each tied the course record of 62. Boros accomplished the feat
during round two while Barranger posted his 62 in round three. The purse was
increased by $25,000 from last year. This is the 10th year of the event, all
of which have been held at the Club at Mission Dorado. There are only six
events on the schedule of the BUY.COM Tour since its inception in 1990. The
events which share that distinction are: Knoxville, Cleveland, Ozarks,
Siouxland, Wichita and Boise. There have been only two playoffs in tournament
history. The first came in 1993 when Franklin Langham defeated Doug Martin on
the first extra hole and the second came in 1998 when Stiles Mitchell knocked
off Jeff Barlow and Woody Austin with a par on the first playoff hole. There
has never been a wire-to-wire winner of this event. Michael Christie owns the
best final-day comeback at this event. Christie came from three down in 1996
to overtake Anthony Rodriguez and win by two. The BUY.COM Tour will take next
week off and resume with the Utah Classic the last week in August at Willow
Creek Country Club where Andy Morse captured the 2000 event.
