Tiger Woods
captures Players Championship
Tiger
Woods captured The Players Championship in a Monday finish, surviving
a bogey on the final hole to post a one-shot victory over Vijay
Singh. The win was Woods' second in as many weeks and the 26th of
his PGA Tour career.
Woods, who
was 14-under midway through the back nine, looked to be headed to
a relatively easy victory when playing partner Jerry Kelly failed
to make a move and Singh stumbled badly at the 14th hole.
But Kelly made
a birdie at 15 to pull within two, while Singh eagled the par-five
16th to join him at 12-under par. Singh really turned up the heat
at the 17th, where his nine-iron to the treacherous island green
set up a five-foot birdie putt that cut Woods' lead to one.
Woods reached
the 16th in two and two-putted for birdie and a two-shot lead at
15-under, then made an important par save when his tee shot flirted
with disaster at 17.
Although Singh
unleashed a booming drive at the par-four 18th, his approach left
him with a long way for birdie. He needed two putts to get down
for par and walked off the final green at 13-under par.
Woods made
it interesting at 18 when he missed the fairway for the fourth straight
round and was forced to wedge out of the right rough. His third
shot from 135 yards was right on the pin but landed short and rolled
back. Woods' bid for par stopped a foot short and he tapped in for
a harmless bogey to seal the win.
Woods, who
collected the enormous $1,080,000 winner's share to vault atop the
season money list, closed with a 67 for a 72-hole total of 14-under-par
274.
Bernhard Langer,
who posted a roller-coaster final nine that included five birdies
and three bogeys, matched Woods for the low round of the day with
a 67 to finish in third behind Singh at 12-under 276.
Kelly drove
into the rough at the final hole and sent his second shot into the
water left of the fairway. He chipped and two-putted for a double-bogey
six and a final-round 73 for fourth place at minus-10.
