NOTES:
Two strokes behind Chris Smith with one hole to play, Steve Runge birdied
18 and Smith bogeyed to force a playoff. On the first extra hole, Runge holed
out from the front right bunker and Smith missed from 25 feet, giving Runge
his first career BUY.COM Tour win. The two players were roommates for four
years at Ohio State. The win made Runge the sixth first-time winner on Tour in
2000. Third-round co-leaders Brett Quigley and Spike McRoy finished tied for
third and tied for sixth, respectively. Runge shot a final round of 66, which
included an eagle-two on the par-four 12th hole when his six-iron from 184
yards found the bottom of the cup. Last year's playoff was the third in the
tournament's eight-year history. The 18-hole record for this event is 59, set
by Notah Begay III in the second round of the 1998 event. Runge will try to
become the first player in BUY.COM Tour history to successfully defend his
title. There have been four holes-in-one made at this event, three of which
came at the Dominion Club. Last year, Dave Barr aced the 210-yard seventh
hole during the first round. 1999 runner-up Dick Mast finished tied for third
last year after a Sunday round of 67. The purse was increased by $25,000 from
last year. Stonehenge Golf & Country Club will be hosting this event for the
second straight year. The Dominion Club in Glen Allen, Virginia had hosted
this event since its inception in 1993 when it was called the NIKE Dominion
Open. Stonehenge is located on the site of a former coal mine, the Stonehenge
Mines. Coal was shipped from there to nearby Dellone Arsenal in the 1800s. The
mine is currently used to help with the irrigation of water supply on the
course. The BUY.COM Tour will take a week off before heading to Scranton,
Pennsylvania for the Steamtown Classic at Glenmaura National Golf Club,
May 31-June 3. Current PGA Tour player Jeff Hart captured last year's
inaugural Steamtown Classic.
