vows to return to Ryder Cup Jose
Maria Olazabal has vowed to make it back into Europe's Ryder Cup squad in 2003. The
Spaniard lost out to Jesper Parnevik for The Belfry match in three weeks' time. European
captain Sam Torrance told Olazabal the bad news face-to-face in Munich on Sunday
night. It is the
first time Olazabal has not been part of the selected side since his debut in
1987, although he missed out with injury six years ago. Olazabal
had to win the BMW International Open in Munich to edge Welshman Phillip Price
out of the 10th and last automatic spot, but finished only 13th. The
inference from Torrance was that even if he had gone close to winning, Olazabal
might have got the nod. "It
was very difficult to tell Olly, but unfortunately he is not on top of his game,"
said Torrance. "Jose was fine. He's a gentleman. It was not the decision
he wanted to hear, but somebody has to miss out. "He
told me he will definitely be back and he wished me the best of luck. Jesper will
be a great asset. He's been there, done that and has a lot of experience. He and
Sergio could well be playing together again. "It's
a testament to our strength in depth that Olly is missing. That's how strong we
are and I am absolutely sure we will have our 12 strongest players at The Belfry." Torrance
also revealed that he had considered 24-year-old Surrey player Paul Casey - a
professional for only 10 months, but winner of the Scottish PGA title last week
and seventh in Munich. "Maybe
given another month he would have made it, sure, but he will definitely be there
in the future," added Torrance. "Definitely."
