follow Ryder Cup delay The
postponement of the 2001 Ryder Cup by a year has thrown up complications that
will take some time to resolve, a European Tour official said on Monday. "There
is so much which has to be looked at with 101 questions that need answering,"
the European Tour told Reuters. "With
this year's contest at The Belfry having been called off with less than two weeks
to go, we now have to look at things like insurance, hotels, ticketing and compensation.
"The decision
to postpone the Ryder Cup was only made at five o'clock yesterday (Sunday) afternoon,
so it hasn't given us too much time to look at all the implications." The
34th Ryder Cup, scheduled for The Belfry from September 28-30, was put back until
September next year as a result of last week's terror attacks on the United States.
The PGA of America
informed the European Ryder Cup board on Sunday that "the scope of last Tuesday's
tragedy is so overwhelming that it would be impossible for the United States Ryder
Cup team and officials to attend the matches this month". As
a result, next year's postponed match between the United States and Europe will
feature the same 12-man teams and captains as would have lined up at The Belfry
at the end of this month, the European Ryder Cup board have said. Yet,
for this to happen, various specifics still need to be outlined and qualification
for the 2003 Ryder Cup, due to be held at Oakland Hills in Detroit, has now been
thrown into some disarray. In
the past, European Ryder Cup qualification has spanned an 18-month cycle but,
with only one year now bridging the proposed contest at The Belfry with the 2003
showdown at Oakland Hills, this format will be impossible. A
further complication already caused by the Ryder Cup postponement is a likely
date change for the 2002 Presidents Cup, a biennial Ryder Cup-style competition
matching the United States against an International team from outside Europe.
The Presidents
Cup was due to be held in George, South Africa from November 7-10 next year but
it could well be put back until 2003. The
PGA Tour said on Sunday that discussions were being held with the relevant parties
and that they were hopeful of making an official announcement within a week. A
great deal still needs to be done before the congested tournament schedules around
the world can accommodate the postponed 2001 Ryder Cup and the European Tour said
on Monday it was not expecting an early solution.
