Thunderstorms
cancel third round
Massive thunderstorms have
canceled the third round of the San Paulo Brazil Open on Saturday.
Play will resume on Sunday morning, with the championship now shortened
to 54 holes.
"Unfortunately
it is not realistic to aim for a 72-hole tournament so we are going
to restart tomorrow morning and declare a winner after 54 holes,"
said tournament director Miguel Vidaor. "These are some of the biggest
storms I have ever witnessed. The players know it is going to be
a 54-hole tournament so we will have a worthy winner."
South Africa's
Darren Fichardt is on top at 14-under 128 after a second-round 61.
That score would have broken the course record of 63 set last year
by Matthew Blackey, but Friday's round was contested under preferred
lies. Fichardt, who has not hit a shot since lunchtime on Friday,
will be in search of his first win on the European Tour.
Brett Rumford
is alone in second at 11-under and Jose Coceres is a shot further
at minus-10.
Christopher
Hanell is in fourth at nine-under par and Nic Henning has sole possession
of fifth at eight-under 134.
Thirteen players
began their third round and those players will resume what is now
their final round on Sunday.
