NOTES:
Joe Inman performed a three-peat when he captured last year's
event by three shots over Larry Nelson. Inman made just one bogey in
the event, becoming the fifth player in Senior Tour history to win an
event three consecutive years. Inman led from start to finish with his
final round of 65 including five birdies on the back nine. Inman's
lone bogey came during the opening round on the fourth hole. Inman and
Stewart Ginn were the only players in the field to post all three
rounds in the 60's. Ginn finished third, six shots back. Inman has
posted nine straight rounds in the 60's at this event with a scoring
average of 66.55. This is the first of three SBC events on the 2001
Senior Tour schedule and the eighth of 45 events overall. Last year,
this event was held in October, one week prior to the season-ending
Tour Championship. Of the 11 previous tournaments, six have been
decided by one shot, one by two shots and two in playoffs. Only twice
(1992 and 2000) has the event been a runaway, when Raymond Floyd won
by three shots and last year. In the events history, no champion has
ever shot a round over par and only one, Mike Hill has had a round in
the 70's on his way to victory in 1990. Valencia Country Club takes
over as the host site for this event. Valencia was the site of the
1998 Nissan Open on the PGA Tour where Billy Mayfair defeated Tiger
Woods in a playoff. The event was previously held at Wilshire Country
Club for the last six years while Rancho Park Golf Club hosted the
tournament the first five years. When Gil Morgan won this event in
1996, he became the youngest winner in SENIOR TOUR history, just 11
days after turning 50. Morgan has won four times at three different
venues in Los Angeles - The Glen Campbell Los Angeles Open at Riviera
Country Club in 1978 and at Rancho Park in 1983, as well as this event
at Wilshire Country Club in 1996-97. There have been only two playoffs
in tournament history, the last coming in 1993 when Dale Douglass
clipped Jim Dent. Inman will try to become the fifth player in Senior
Tour history to win the same event four straight years. The four
players who have accomplished this feat are: Chi Chi Rodriguez, Bob
Charles, George Archer and Hale Irwin. There have been six holes-in-
one at this event. Charles Sifford registered the first one in 1990,
Jim O'Hern in 1991, Bert Yancey in 1992, Bob Goalby in 1996 and David
Graham and Bobby Stroble each had an ace in 1997. Four players have
participated in all 11 of the previous SBC Senior Classics -- Dale
Douglass, Al Geiberger, Rocky Thompson and Tom Shaw. All four players
are expected to compete this week. Gil Morgan has also enjoyed success
at this event with two wins and four top-10 finishes in five events
with a scoring average of 67.87. The Senior Tour moves north to San
Jose, California for the inaugural Siebel Classic in Silicon Valley.
