Last week's Darkhorse (Jay Sigel) - Finished tied for 16th
NOTES:
Ray Floyd completed the largest come-from-behind win in the history
of the event and the first come-from-behind effort since 1992 when he came
from six strokes back to edge both Larry Nelson and Dana Quigley. Floyd capped
his final-round 66 with a clutch 20-foot birdie putt on the last hole.
Quigley, who had been up by two strokes with six holes to play, hooked his
tee shot into the left hazard on the final hole and made bogey to lose by a
shot. Thanks to victories in both 1996 and 2000, Floyd, has won more money
than any other player in tournament history -- $892,311. Hale Irwin, a winner
in 1999, is second with $787,991, while another two-time winner, Dave Stockton
(1992, 1994) is third with $654,164. In recent years, Irwin has dominated this
event with a win, runner-up finishes in 1996 and '98 and a fourth-place finish
last year. The starting field of 78 players is determined as follows: 1.
The top 76 available players on the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship
points list starting the week following last year's event through the Farmers
Charity Classic, the event immediately preceding the current year's FORD
SENIOR PLAYERS Championship; 2. At the option of the Commissioner, a total
of two senior professionals selected by the Commissioner and the sponsoring
organization (FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship Charities, Inc.). If two
players are not invited under this option, then 78 players shall be
eligible under Rule 1. In the history of the tournament, only five players
in 18 events have opened with a round in the 70s and gone on to win. Arnold
Palmer, who fired an even-par 72 in 1984, is the only player to not shoot
under par in the opening round and still win the tournament. Palmer
opened with an even-par 72, then followed with three consecutive sub-70
rounds to defeat Peter Thomson by three strokes. There has been just one
playoff in the previous 18 FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championships, and that
came in 1995, when J.C. Snead defeated Jack Nicklaus with a birdie-3 on the
first extra hole. The FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship traditionally has
been a favorite among "rookies" on the SENIOR PGA TOUR. Chi Chi Rodriguez
(1986), Jack Nicklaus (1990), Jim Albus (1991) and Dave Stockton (1992) all
won in their first appearances at the event. In their maiden voyages around
the TPC of Michigan, Lee Trevino, Hubert Green, Isao Aoki, Raymond Floyd,
Hale Irwin, Gil Morgan, Jay Sigel, Jim Colbert, Bruce Fleisher and Tom Kite
all finished in the top 10. In the previous 18 events, the winner has shot
over par just four times in one of his rounds. Gary Player had a 73 in the
second round in 1987, Billy Casper posted a 74 in the third round in 1988,
Jim Albus shot a second-round 74 in 1991 and Raymond Floyd finished with a
73 in 1996. From 1990 through last year's event, the first-round
leader or co-leader of the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship has gone on to
win the event just three times -- and only once has that happened since
1991 (Larry Gilbert - 1997). Second-round leaders or co-leaders have
claimed six of the last 11 FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championships, including
three of the last five. Leaders or co-leaders after 54 holes have won the
FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship eight of 11 times since 1990, including
three straight years from 1997-99. Hole No. 12 was the toughest hole at the
2000 FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship with an average score of 3.318 or
.318 over par. It was also the 18th most difficult on the SENIOR TOUR for the
year. Hole No. 14 ranked as the second hardest at 4.266 (+.266). That
ranked 41st overall. Hole #7 was the easiest at last year's event, and it
was also the sixth easiest on the SENIOR TOUR in 2000 with an average score
of 4.455 (-.545). The TPC of Michigan ranked 16th among 38 courses on the
SENIOR TOUR, with an average score of 72.506 or .506 over par. There have
been seven holes-in-one in tournament history. The most recent came last year
when John Jacobs had one at the eighth hole in the third round. Arnold Palmer
is the only player in tournament history to go wire-to-wire for his victory.
Palmer did so in 1985, when he was an 11-stroke victor over four players at
the Canterbury Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio. The TPC of Michigan has hosted
this tournament since 1991. This event was held at Canterbury Country Club in
Cleveland the first four years, followed by the TPC at Sawgrass in Ponte
Vedra, Florida and Dearborn Country Club in Michigan. Dave Stockton and Arnold
Palmer are the only players to win this event twice and Palmer is the only
player to win this event two straight years. Bob Charles has posted seven
top-10 finishes at this event, while Miller Barber, Palmer, Lee Trevino and
Floyd have posted six. This is the final "Major" on the Senior Tour. Doug
Tewell won the The Tradition, Tom Watson captured the Senior PGA
Championship and Bruce Fleisher captured the U.S. Senior Open. The winner of this event
will join the three major championship winners at the Senior Slam in December.
There have been 15 different winners in the 18-year history of this event. The
purse was increased by $200,000 from last year. The Senior Tour moves to
Illinois next week for the SBC Senior Open where Tom Kite will defend his
title at Kemper Lakes Golf Club.
