Kamm takes narrow lead
Brian Kamm posted a four-under
68 on Friday to grab a one-shot lead after the second round of the Buy.com Shreveport
Open. His 11-under-par 131 puts him ahead of Pat Bates and Bob Heintz as players
make their run to get into the top-55 on the money list and enter next week's
Tour Championship.
Kamm was not flashy on Friday
as he began play on the second nine at Southern Trace. He made back-to-back birdies
at 15 and 16 for a front-nine 34.
He opened his second nine
with another pair of birdies at one and two before parring the next five. Kamm
bogeyed No. 8 to drop into a share of the lead but a birdie at the par-five ninth
gave him sole possession of the top spot.
Kamm is on the bubble, currently
55th on the money list, and it is not the first time he has been in a difficult
position at the Shreveport Open. In 1997, he finished as runner-up to earn the
right to play in the Tour Championship, then tied for fifth there to finish eighth
on the final money list to qualify for the PGA Tour the following year.
"I've played well here
in the past," said Kamm. "Part of it is confidence, but the greens play
hard and I enjoy that part of it."
Heintz has also enjoyed
success in this event, winning in 1999, and he needs another big finish to qualify
for next week.
"Two years ago it was
survival. This year we are seeing who can outdo each other birdie-wise,"
said Heintz, who is 67th on the money list. "I understand the greens. I'm
comfortable with the grain and the speed. I like them fast."
Bates mixed six birdies
and two bogeys over his round on Friday for a four- under 68.
Brian Claar is alone in
fourth place at nine-under par, followed by Stiles Mitchell and Don Reese, who
share fifth at minus-eight.
D.A. Points, John Rollins
and Jason Caron are knotted in seventh at seven- under.
Tjaart van der Walt, who
led after round one, struggled to a two-over 74 and is part of a group tied for
10th at minus-six.
Sixty-eight players made
the cut, which fell at two-under-par 142.
