Kamm retains narrow lead

Brian Kamm birdied three of the last five holes to retain his one-shot lead after Saturday's third round of the Buy.com Shreveport Open. He carded a five-under 67 for a 54-hole total of 16-under-par 200 at Southern Trace Country Club.

Pat Bates also had a 67 to finish the day alone in fifth at 15-under, while Brian Claar was next at 13-under after shooting 68. Billy Judah posted the day's best round of seven-under 65 for a share of 12-under with Jason Caron, who shot 67.

At 55th on the season money list, Kamm is right on the bubble for earning a spot in next week's Buy.com Tour Championship. But while a win this week will get him into that tournament, it won't make him one of the top 15 players that move on to the PGA Tour. For that, Kamm will also have to challenge for the title at the season-ending event in Alabama.

A PGA Tour member for much of the 1990s, Kamm can make great strides toward returning to the big leagues with a victory at Southern Trace, where he finished second in 1997 and tied for third in '98.

Kamm negated a birdie at the second hole Saturday with a bogey at the fourth and made the turn even for his round. He quickly eagled the par-five 10th to kick-start his big back nine.

"I didn't get off to a good start, but the eagle turned me around," said Kamm, who captured the Panama City Beach Classic in 1992.

Bates, who lost to Omar Uresti in a playoff at the 1994 Shreveport Open, would like to add this year's trophy to his mantle but certainly doesn't need it. He is currently ninth in earnings and virtually assured a place in the top 15 for 2001.

"This was my breakout seven years ago and hopefully it's my sendoff," said Bates, the winner of the Siouxland Open in July. "I have enjoyed this tour, but look forward to the PGA Tour."
