NOTES:
Tied for the lead after three rounds with Brad Ball and David Berganio,
Jr., Spike McRoy carded his fourth straight round in the 60's, a four-under 68
to post a one-shot win over Mike Schuchart for his first career win. Berganio
shot 73 to tie for eighth while Ball finished tied for 15th after a 75. The win
helped to propel McRoy to number-one on the BUY.COM season-ending money list,
as he advanced to the PGA Tour. McRoy has competed in 19 PGA events this year,
making the cut nine times with one top-10 finish, a tie for third at the Kemper
Insurance Open. There have been three holes-in-one recorded in the history of
the BUY.COM Siouxland Open. Doug Johnson was the first to register an ace,
doing it in the second round of the 1991 event at the old course location.
Ahmad Bateman (2nd round/No. 16/1997) and Robin Freeman (1st round/No.14/1998)
are the only others to make a hole-in-one during the tournament's 11-year
history. In history of the event, there have been two wire-to-wire winners in
Dakota Dunes. Kim Young did it in 1990, while John Maginnes led start-to-finish
wire-to-wire was Brett Quigley at the 2001 Arkansas Classic in April.
Playoffs have decided the champion at this event in three of the last five
tournaments. Chris Smith became the first player in BUY.COM Tour history to win
the same event twice, when he won this event in 1995 and in 1997. Smith's 1997
total of 268 set a tournament record, breaking his previous mark of 272 set in
'95. In 1993, the tournament was played as a par-69 and the tournament was
shortened to 68 holes when flood waters from the Missouri River made the par-3,
eighth hole unplayable for the week. The 463-yard, par-4, 9th hole ranked as
the toughest of the tournament last year, playing to a scoring average of
4.300. The hole yielded only 35 birdies, the fewest of any hole on the Dakota
Dunes CC course. The 9th hole was rated No. 40 overall on the 2000 BUY.COM
TOUR. For the week, the Dakota Dunes par-72 course played to a scoring average
of 71.276, which put it No. 24 among the 31 courses played last year. The
Siouxland Open is one of six tournaments that has been on the schedule since
the inception of the TOUR in 1990. Other members of the original six include
the Knoxville Open, Greater Cleveland Open, Ozarks Open, Wichita Open and Boise
Open. The purse was decreased by $75,000 from last year. Next week the BUY.COM
Tour moves to Missouri for the Omaha Classic at The Champions Club.
