NOTES:
Tied for the lead with the top two players in the world (Karrie
Webb and Annika Sorenstam) after three rounds, Charlotta Sorenstam
carded a final round of 68 to defeat Webb by two shots and her sister
Annika by five as she captured her maiden LPGA victory. Charlotta
moved into contention with a 18-hole record tying 64 during round two.
Charlotta and Webb were tied for the lead with just three holes
remaining, however Webb shanked her bunker shot on 16 leading to a
bogey and Charlotta birdied the final hole for the two-stroke
advantage. Sister Annika struggled with her second straight round of
73 to finish alone in third, five strokes back. Hiromi Kobayashi was
the only player in the field to post all four rounds under par,
leading her to a tie for sixth place finish. The purse was increased
by $150,000 from last year. Laura Davies won this event four straight
years from 1994-97, but tied for 25th last year. The tournament
returns to Moon Valley Country Club after a one-year hiatus for course
renovations. Moon Valley Country Club had hosted this tournament from
1987 through 1999, but the event was held at Legacy Golf Resort in
2000. Arizona Biltmore Country Club was the tournament host in 1983-86
and Hillcrest Golf Club held the event the first three years of its
existence (1980-82). This is the final tune-up for next week's first
"major" of the season, the Nabisco Championship where Webb is the
defending champion.
