NOTES:
One shot behind third-round leader Bob May heading into Sunday's final
round, Notah Begay III carded a two-under 69 to clip May and Chris DiMarco and
win for the third time in his career. Begay, who won the following week,
carded all four rounds in the 60's and clinched the win with a two-putt par
from five-feet on the final hole. Both May and DiMarco had chances to force a
playoff, but May missed a birdie try from eight feet and DiMarco's slipped by
from 25-feet. Begay III and DiMarco were the lone players in the field to post
all four rounds in the 60's. Begay has been slowed this year due to a lower
back injury and has competed in only seven tournaments with two cuts made.
Nick Price, a two-time winner of this event, has posted 17 rounds under par at
this venue in his last 21 rounds with three rounds being at even-par and one
at three-over. Price tied for 25th last year. This is the 13th year in which
the tournament has been held at the TPC at Southwind. The purse was increased
$500,000 from last year. Lee Trevino was the last player to win back-to-back
titles at this venue in 1971-72. The golf course features eight lakes and
three streams, affecting play on 11 holes. Al Geiberger became the first
player to shoot 59 in PGA TOUR history back in 1977 at the FedEx St. Jude
Classic. Hal Sutton owns the record for the biggest comeback in tournament
history, when he came from eight back to win the event in 1985. Price and Dave
Hill are the only players to win this event wire-to-wire. Hill accomplished
the feat in 1967 and Price in 1998. Price (2), Hill (4) and Trevino (3) are
the only multiple winners of the tournament. 20 of the past 31 champions of
this event have held at least a share of the lead heading into the final
round. Begay became the 18th player to come from behind and win this
tournament. Nine of the last 11 winners of this event have posted all four
rounds under par with the lone exceptions in 1995 and 1990 when Jim Gallagher,
Jr. and Tom Kite won the event, respectively. The tournament has raised over
$11.5 million since 1986 for the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. This
event will serve as the final tune-up for next week's U.S. Open at Southern
Hills in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Tiger Woods will defend his title.
