NOTES:
Only one shot off the pace after round one last year, Andrew Morse
carded a second-round 66 to take control of the tournament and despite the
inclement weather, outlasted John Riegger by two shots for his first career
win. For the second consecutive year, rain hampered the first two rounds,
causing six weather delays. All 61 players who made the cut had to play more
than 18 holes on Sunday, including 32 holes by Morse. Morse will be looking to
do what no one has done on the BUY.COM Tour - successfully defend a title. And
only three players have won the same tournament twice in the 11-year history
of the Tour. Chris Smith (1995 and 1997) and Pat Bates (1994 and 2001)
captured victories in Dakota Dunes, S.D., while Ryan Howison won the 1997 and
1999 Lakeland Classics. Willow Creek Country Club ranked No. 20 on the list of
31 toughest golf courses on this TOUR last year as it played to an average of
421-under par. That was a big move from the year prior, when it was the
second-easiest course on TOUR with an average of 1.225-under par. The par-4,
423-yard eighth hole was the most difficult at last year's event and the 68th
most difficult on TOUR with a stroke average of 4.238. The most difficult on
the TOUR was the par-4 17th hole at The Links at Yankee Trace in Dayton, Ohio.
That hole played to a 4.631 stroke average during the 2000 Dayton Open. Mark
Hensby, who led after a course-record 63 in the opening round, finished tied
for 22nd. After seeing four holes-in-one during the Utah Classic's first
tournament, there were none in the second year of the event. There are five
par-3 holes at the 7,104-yard course, and the 1999 aces came on four different
holes: Chad Ginn - No. 2, Robin Byrd - No. 11, Rich Barcelo - No. 7 and Donnie
Hammond - No. 15. The only hole not to see an ace was the par-3 fifth hole. It
was the first time since the 1994 Cleveland Open that four aces were recorded
during the same event. Only three of the 117 players to make the cut in the
two years that a 72-hole tournament has been held at Willow Creek CC have
managed to card all four rounds in the 60s - Carl Paulson, Craig Bowden and
Shaun Micheel. Third-round leaders are two-for-two in converting their 54-hole
leads to victories at Willow Creek CC. Carl Paulson and Andy Morse
successfully held on to five-stroke and four-stroke advantages, respectively,
to claim their first TOUR victories. The purse was increased by $25,000 from
last year. Next week the BUY.COM Tour moves to Washington for the Tri-Cities
Open. Darron Stiles captured last year's event.
