NOTES:
Colin Montgomerie became the first player in tournament history to win
this event three straight years, as he defeated Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood
and Andrew Coltart by three shots last year. Trailing by two shots after
round one, Montgomerie carded a second-round 65 and led the rest of the
way, carding a final-round of 69 for a total of 271. Clarke closed with a
66 to tie Westwood (68) and Coltart (69). Monty will try to equal the mark
of four Volvo PGA Championship titles, set by Nick Faldo (1978, 80, 81,
89). Peter Alliss and Bernhard Langer are the other three-time winners of
this event. Ernie Els, who skipped this event last year but is scheduled to
compete this week, has been runner-up three times and tied for fourth in
1999. This tournament has been held at the Wentworth Club since 1984 and is
considered the European Tour's flagship event. The purse was increased by
500,000 pounds from last year, the 13th consecutive year the purse has been
increased. Bernhard Langer holds the record for must sub-par rounds at this
event with 41, followed by Nick Faldo at 39. Montgomerie is the all-time money
winner with 1,310,602 euros in earnings and has posted a tournament best 28
rounds in the 60's. Montgomerie has also recorded 10 top-10's at this event,
one ahead of Faldo. Langer is the only player in event history to win wire-to-
wire (1987) with no ties. Only four players have posted all four rounds in the
60's and have won, the last coming in 1996 when Costantino Rocca turned the
trick. The European Tour remains in England next week for the Victor
Chandler British Masters at Woburn, where Gary Orr will defend his title.
