NOTES:
This year's event replaces the du Maurier Classic as the fourth major
on the LPGA Tour. Two shots off the pace after Thursday's opening round last
year, Sophie Gustafson carded rounds of 66-71 to open up a seven-shot lead
with one round to play and despite a Sunday 75, she still captured the 2000
edition of the Women's British Open. Kirsty Taylor, Liselotte Neumann, Becky
Iverson and Meg Mallon finished two shots back in second. Holding a one-shot
advantage on 18, Gustafson went for the green in two, but found the green-side
bunker. She played out of the trap to five feet, with Mallon 15 feet away for
eagle. Although an eagle for Mallon combined with a bogey for Gustafson would
have forced a playoff, Mallon missed her attempt and Gustafson drained her
putt to cement the victory. First round leader Karrie Webb finished alone in
seventh after an opening 68, the only player in the field to break 70 in the
first round. Webb is attempting to become only the third player in LPGA
history to win three majors in one season, having already won the U.S. Women's
Open and the LPGA Championship. Babe Zaharias captured three majors in 1950
and in 1986 Pat Bradley won three majors and finished fifth at the Women's
Open. This event has been part of the LPGA Tour since 1994. The purse was
increased by $250,000 from last year to $1,500,000. Sherri Steinhauer, Karrie
Webb and Debbie Massey are the only two-time winners of this event. Steinhauer
and Massey are the only players to win the tournament in back-to-back years.
Sunningdale Golf Club hosted this event in 1997 when Karrie Webb captured the
event. Royal Birkdale Golf Club was the venue for this event last year, while
Woburn Golf & Country Club has hosted the tournament 12 times. The LPGA Tour
returns to the United States next week for the Wendy's Championship for
Children at New Albany where Lorie Kane will defend her title.
