NOTES:
Ben Crane became the 12th Monday qualifier in BUY.COM Tour history
to become victorious when he captured last year's Wichita Open. Trailing by
three shots after round one, Crane shot rounds of 63-66-67 to post a three
shot win over Kelly Grunewald and Vance Veazey. Crane's winning total of 263
set a new tournament record, breaking the previous mark of 265 set by Emlyn
Aubrey in 1998. This event is one of the "Original Six" of the BUY.COM Tour.
The Wichita Open, Knoxville Open, Cleveland Open, Dakota Dunes Open, Ozarks
Open and Boise Open have been on the schedule since the Tour began in 1990.
Ben Crane will be looking to do what no one has done on the BUY.COM TOUR --
successfully defend a title. Only two players have won the same tournament
twice in the 11-year history of the BUY.COM TOUR. Chris Smith captured the
1995 and 1997 Dakota Dunes Opens and Ryan Howison won the 1997 and 1999
Lakeland Classics. There have been five holes-in-one during the first 11 years
of the BUY.COM Wichita Open, but none in the past six years. All of the aces
occurred at Reflection Ridge CC, with four of them coming on the 12th hole.
ohn Bizik was the first to register an ace, on the third hole of the first
round of the 1991 tournament. Chris Peddicord aced the 12th hole during the
second round that year. Tommy Moore (round 3, 1993), Taylor Smith (round 4,
1993) and Emlyn Aubrey (round 2, 1994) also posted aces on the 12th hole
during tournament week. David Duval and Tom Lehman are past winners of this
event. In the 11-year history of the event, Lehman and Eric Hoos are the only
winners who have gone wire-to-wire to capture the Wichita Open. The last
player on the TOUR to win wire-to-wire was Brett Quigley at the 2001 Arkansas
Classic in April. In the eight years that this has been a 72-hole tournament,
only 35 players have fired all four rounds in the 60s. During those
same eight years, only four of the third-round leaders have gone on to win the
tournament. Dennis Postlewait (1994), Brad Elder (1999) and Crane (2000)
turned sole possession of their 54-hole leads into victory, while Aubrey
shared the third-round lead with two others before earning the win. Meanwhile,
in the three years in which the tournament was a 54-hole event, two of the
second-round leaders went on to victory - Lehman (1990) and Hoos (1991). After
four years at Willowbend Golf Club, the tournament moves across town to
Crestview Country Club, the only 36-hole facility in Wichita. The first seven
years of the tournament were held at Reflection Ridge Golf Club. Three of the
11 Wichita Open's have been decided by a playoff, six by one shot, one by two
and last year's three-stroke margin. The purse was increased by $25,000 from
last year. The BUY.COM Tour moves to South Dakota for the Siouxland Open
where Spike McRoy captured last year's event.
