Torrance surprise winner
over Singh
European Ryder Cup captain
Sam Torrance has pulled off the biggest surprise of the World Match Play Championship
in recent years by beating Vijay Singh by two holes in the quarter-finals.
The 48-year-old Torrance was only asked to play three days before the event after
Canadian Mike Weir pulled out but he battled superbly to stay all square with
tournament favourite Singh.
Then he birdied the 35th
hole, the par five 17th, with two putts from just off the green to pull a hole
clear before keeping his nerve at the last to close Singh out after the Fijian
had found a bunker from the tee.
Ian Woosnam, a late entrant
because of American absentees, outplayed last year's runner-up Colin Montgomerie
to win 4 and 3 over the West Course and follow his surprise defeat of U.S. Open
champion Retief Goosen on Thursday.
Ireland's Harrington was
even more dominant in his match with world number nine Darren Clarke, winning
5 and 4.
In the other 36-hole quarter-final
match, English holder Lee Westwood birdied the par five last to beat Denmark's
Thomas Bjorn by one hole.
On Saturday, Torrance will
play Harrington and Westwood meets Woosnam in the semifinals.
