wins weather ruined event Sweden's
Carl Pettersson won his first European Tour title in a play-off at the rain-ruined
Algarve Open de Portugal. Pettersson
was forced into a sudden-death shoot-out with Britain's David Gilford after dire
weather intervened at the end of the second round with the pair at the top of
the leaderboard. Play
was originally rescheduled to make the tournament a three-round affair but further
downpours ensured the only action possible would be in a play-off for the £76,000
first prize. Both
players found the sodden fairway on the 18th but then Gilford pulled his approach
shot over the back of the green. He
was unable to save par, which gave Pettersson the opportunity to two-putt for
par and victory. It
is only the second time on European Tour history that a 36-hole event has been
decided by a play-off. Mansfield's
Greg Owen, Spain's Miguel Angel Martin and Swede Henrik Nystrom shared third place
on one under par.
