Three share halfway lead

Colin Montgomerie shot a second round 67 to take a share of the lead of the B&H International Open at the Belfry.

The Scot was in sparkling form, racking up five birdies in a bogey-free round to tie with South African Roger Wessels and Thursday’s overnight leader Greg Owen on six under par.

Montgomerie was especially pleased with his display, given that the course will play host to the Ryder Cup later this year.

"I want to do well here because it's the Ryder Cup venue, and I want to prove to myself and the team I can compete," said Montgomerie.

"I want to prove that I'm not on this tour to make up the numbers nowadays but to compete.

"Obviously if I win it will be a bonus. If I don't, I want to do the best I possibly can.

"Any Ryder Cup player that wins this tournament will get a tremendous boost – a tremendous boost for him and his team mates."

Montgomerie split with caddie Alastair McLean earlier this week after 10 years together. Jason Henning carries Montgomerie's clubs this week, though the seven-time European number one is expected to unveil a new caddie shortly.

The Scot may have fired one Friday's finest rounds, but Thursday leader Owen held his nerve admirably after his opening day 66, carding a level par 72, while Wessels fired his second consecutive 69.

Two-time major winner John Daly continued his recent renaissance with an impressive second round 69, to go with Thursday’s 70 to sit on five under.

Anthony Wall, Ian Woosnam and David Drysdale join Daly on five under.
