Cabrera gains second European win

Argentina's Angel Cabrera held off Barry Lane to take the Benson and Hedges International Open at The Belfry, a last round 69 giving him a final score of ten-under-par and a one shot victory.

Scotland's Colin Montgomerie matched Cabrera with his own three-under-par effort over the last 18 holes however he could not close the two shot gap and finished in third.

Padraig Harrington and New Zealand's Michael Campbell joined the Ryder Cup player on the eight-under-par mark, after shooting 69 and 70 respectively.

This is Cabrera's second European Tour victory, after he picked up the Open de Argentina at The Jockey Club last year.

He started out with birdies on the fourth and seventh, but could only pick up a bogey on the eighth to bring the others back into contention.

The 32-year-old though recovered well to land two more birdies in the next two holes, before another bogey on the 11th hole hampered his charge.

He held his nerve though to pick up an all-important birdie on the 17th and leave Lane's victory charge in tatters.

The four-time European Tour winner dropped four shots in his closing 73, his final bogey on the 16th proving the difference between second and first.

A double bogey on the tenth and bogey on the last spoiled an otherwise good round for Montgomerie, who looks back in form in time for the upcoming US Open.

Bogeys on 14 and 18 set back Harrington's title tilt, while Campbell also dropped shots at 13 and 18 in the tricky conditions.

Former Ryder Cup player Peter Baker finished a very encouraging week with a level-par 72 to finish on his own in sixth, John Daly's 70 leaving him one shot behind in a tie for ninth with first round leader Greg Owen.

Nick Faldo carded a 71 to finish to maintain his good start to the season and US Open champion Retief Goosen ended a frustrating week with an excellent 68 back in 19th.
