Unknowns lead first round
Two
of the lesser known names on the European Tour have set the pace in the British
Masters at Woburn, Dutchman Robert-Jan Derksen and Spain's Santiago Luna shooting
five-under-par 67's.
They are one stroke ahead of
defending champion Thomas Levet of France, Denmark's Soren Hansen and the British
trio of Phillip Price, Ian Poulter and Raymond Russell.
The
39-year-old Luna won the 1995 Madeira Island Open, while the 28-year-old Derksen's
best finish is a tie for 12th at last year's North West of Ireland Open.
Luna
claimed afterwards: "I always carry four putters with me and I felt I should use
one of the two short ones I played with in practice.
"But
my head told me to go with my old longhandled putter and it was wonderful today."
Derksen
meanwhile nearly did not come to Woburn after celebrating his father Jan's retirement
on Tuesday night, however chipped-in for eagle at the seventh together with his
five birdies.
He
declared: "When I came back on to the full tour, I thought I had to do much more
to succeed and especially spend hours and hours on the range.
"But
it doesn't work for me like it does for other players, so I've gone back to quality
practice of about an hour or an hour-and-a-half. Now I have to see if that works
better."
In-form
Colin Montgomerie, Justin Rose and Thomas Bjorn are all on the two-under-par mark
going into the second day.
