Grewal & Wessals share halfway lead

England's Sandeep Grewal and South African Roger Wessels share the halfway lead at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Johannesburg.

Grewal, a promising 20-year-old, posted a superb 64 on Friday to fly up the leaderboard and put himself into contention for the title.

He eagled the fifth and 16th, which together with six other birdies and just two dropped shots should put him in line for his best ever finish in a European Tour event.

Wessels meanwhile added a 66 to his opening day 68 to join Grewal on 10-under-par, four birdies and a lone eagle enough to secure his place at the top of the leaderboard.

US Open champion Retief Goosen meanwhile carded a 67 to signal his intentions. The 32-year-old birdied the last three holes for the second day in succession, to stake his claim for the title.

He bagged four more birdies earlier in the round but dropped shots at the sixth and 10th to finish the day on nine-under-par.

England's Anthony Wall matched Goosen to lie one shot off the pace, with compatriot Mark Foster, India's Arjun Atwal, Martin Maritz and Mark Pilkington all on eight-under-par.

Atwal followed up his opening day 72 with an excellent 64, nine birdies marred only by the one dropped shot at the Houghton Country Club. Maritz matched his score, with seven birdies and one eagle.

Justin Rose is one of nine players poised to make a move over the weekend, a 66 enough to put him on seven-under-par alongside overnight leaders Stephen Dodd and Paul McGinley.

Home favourite Ernie Els failed to set the course alight later in the day, a 72 leaving him six shots adrift at four-under-par.

Former Blackburn footballer Roy Wegerle though has bowed out of his first Tour event, after an 80 left him stone cold last on 12-over-par at the halfway stage.
