| Borrego
sets opening day pace with 66 Diego
Borrego was the early pace-setter at the Great North Open, firing a first round
66 on Thursday to lead by two at De Vere Slaley Hall. Borrego
looked at the peak of his powers from the off, but saved his best golf for the
back nine en route to his six under total. Having
reached the turn in 35, one under par thanks to a birdie three on five, he then
roared back in 31. The
Spaniard clocked up three consecutive birdies from 10 through 12, before picking
up more shots on 15 and 17. Andrew
Raiit currently sits in second, after the Englishman carded a 68, with a chasing
pack two shots behind on two under. Raitt
bogeyed the first before birdies came on six, 12 and 14, with an eagle three on
the 11th. Mark
Row has made a blistering start, picking up two birdies in his first three holes,
while Paul Casey is one to watch, after he made an opening round 70. Barry
Lane started his assault with an opening 71, as did Simon Dyson. Andrew
Oldcorn, Peter Baker and Roger Chapman all sit on level, in this 144-strong field.
