Thorpe and Jacobs lead first round

Jim Thorpe wasn't fooling anybody -- especially co-leader John Jacobs.

After shooting a 7-under 65 on Friday for a share of the first-round lead in the Instinet Classic, Thorpe joked that he was passing up a trip to the casinos in Atlantic City.

``No, I think I'm going to Bible study tonight,'' Thorpe said. ``I've been doing this for years, so it's time to go another way.''

Jacobs, who lost a playoff to Thorpe three weeks ago in The Tradition, wasn't buying Thorpe's story.

``If there's a casino around here, Jim will be there,'' Jacobs said. ``I'm with my wife, so I'll be going home early.''

Thorpe, a five-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour, finished birdie-birdie-bogey-eagle, hitting a 260-yard approach shot within 3 1/2 feet on the par-5 18th.

``If we don't get some wind this week the scores are going to be ridiculously low,'' Thorpe said. ``There are a lot of birdie holes on this course.

``I haven't putted the ball very well this year. The last three weeks that I played the putting is starting to come around. I'm not a slow green putter. I like when you just touch the ball.''

Jacobs, the winner of the rain-shortened Royal Caribbean Classic in February, had nine birdies after beginning the round with a double bogey.

``You never want to start out with a bogey, and you really don't want to start out with a double bogey,'' Jacobs said. ``But the fairways are getting a little more runny and the greens are receptive. If the wind doesn't blow, its hard to keep the scoring down.''

Ed Dougherty was two strokes back at 67, and Don Pooley, Howard Twitty, Tom Jenkins, Dana Quigley and Mike Smith shot 68s on the TPC at Jasna Polana.

Hale Irwin, seeking his third victory of the year, had a 69, and two-time defending champion Gil Morgan, troubled by neck and rotator cuff injuries, opened with a 73.

Divots

Lee Trevino, playing his first tournament at Jasna Polana, shot a 71 after bogeying the final two holes. ... Gary Player, who designed Jasna Polana, had a 72. ... Tom Purtzer withdrew because of a back injury.
