Borrego gains narrow victory

The Spaniard Diego Borrego took the Madeira Open title on Sunday, holding to to win by one shot.

Borrego hit a final round 69 to finish on 7-under par, with his fellow countryman Ivo Giner having a disappointing final day and finishing runner-up a shot back.

The Englishman Roger Winchester and Dutchman Maarten Lafeber finished a shot further back on 5-under par.

A dropped shot on the first hole from Borrego didn't send out the most impressive message to his rivals, but he soon recovered to play consistent and confident golf.

Birdies at the long third and seventh holes repaired the early damage, and when he also birdied the 11th hole Borrego began to look like the favourite to win.

A splendid tee shot at the short 15th set up another birdie and three pars to finish sealed the Spaniard's triumph.

A topsy-turvy round from Giner began with a double bogey on the first, and although he picked up three birdies around the turn three more shots were dropped and a 73 was never going to be good enough.

Winchester, the highest placed Briton, hit six birdies and dropped just one shot in compiling a final round 67.
