| Harrington
& Immelman share lead Irishman
Padraig Harrington and South African Trevor Immelman shared the lead Friday at
the Madrid Open, where 32 players could not complete the second round because
fog delayed its start.
Harrington would become the European tour's leading
money winner should he earn $52,800 more than South African Retief Goosen in the
$1.37 million event that pays the winner more than $200,000. Harrington carded
a 5-under-par 66 on the 6,957-yard Club de Campo course to stand 11 under at 131
after 36 holes. Goosen,
the 2001 U.S. Open champion, was tied for 11th among those who finished, and was
four shots behind the co-leaders. But Harrington wasn't even thinking about that.
"I was not
looking at what Retief was doing," Harrington said. "It's hard enough
to control what I am doing. But overall I'm happy. I'm leading and you are always
going to hit some bad shots." Immelman
birdied the final hole for a 65 that left him 11 under. He and Harrington were
a shot ahead of Irishman Des Smyth, who carded a 63. Adam
Scott of Australia and Maarten Lafeber of the Netherlands, among those still to
complete the round, were 10 under playing the back nine when darkness brought
play to a halt. They are to finish the round, delayed for 90 minutes at the start,
on Saturday. Sam
Torrance of Scotland had a 66 for a 133. He was tied with Englishman Miles Tunnicliff
and Marten Olander of Sweden. Tunnicliff had a 63 and Olander a 66. Email
