Montgomerie gains unwanted record

Colin Montgomerie has equalled an unwelcome Open record when he carded a third round 84 -- 20 shots worse than his second-round score.

It equalled the worst-ever swing in scores in 131 Opens, matching the 1938 effort of an R.G. French, who followed a second-round 71 with a third-round 91.

Montgomerie's second round 64 was itself a 10-shot improvement on his first round 74.

The Scot, seven times European number one but seeking his first major championship, began Saturday's round with three successive pars but dropped at least one shot on 11 of the remaining 15 holes.
