Daly records an 11 at 16th John
Daly is known for his high scores on individual holes. In Thursday's first round
of the PGA Championship, he took another page out of the book of Roy McAvoy of
"Tin Cup" fame, recording an 11 on the par-4 16th. "I
hit a 3-wood that was just in the rough on the right," Daly said of his tee
shot on the 16th. They said it was in the hazard. I said 'OK,' so I go back and
hit a 2-iron. I hit it pretty dang good, and I guess a gust came up and it went
back into the water. I drop-kicked a 3-wood and barely got over the hazard. I
was more or less in shock. I tried to punch out and hit it left. Then I hit a
lob-wedge from 75 yards. There must have been something like a root under the
ball. It flew over the green and into the hazard. So everything that could go
wrong went wrong on that hole." UNFINISHED:
Thirty-nine players were still on the golf course when the first round was called
due to darkness at 9:19 EDT. The first round was not completed due to a 2-hour,
52-minute weather delay early in the first round. OVER
PAR: While the scoring average for the first round is incomplete, it does give
a hint of how difficult Hazeltine is playing. With
a 75.362 scoring average, the course is over three strokes harder than its par
72. The holes providing the most difficulty are the finishing holes 16, 17 and
18 ranked first, sixth and second, respectively. BOGEY-FREE:
Of 156 players starting the first round, only one player can shoot a bogey-free
round, Bernhard Langer. Langer has played 13 holes with one birdie and 12 pars
and is currently at 1-under-par. BIG
HITTERS: The fairways at Hazeltine have been receptive to the long hitters. Thirty-three
players are averaging more than 300 yards in the first round. Leading the way
is David Duval, with an average of 333.5 yards. PUTTING
STARS: Four players are averaging 1.33 putts per round or 24 over 18 holes. Tim
Weinhart, Fred Funk, Billy Mayfair and Rich Beem, who is still on the course.
CLUB PROS: Twenty-five
club pros teed it up in the first round and none are at par or better. Sean
Farren is the leading club professional at 2-over-par 74. Kent Stauffer is bringing
up the back of the pack with a 15-over-par 87.
