Cejka leads with opening 64

The German Alex Cejka compiled a brilliant 64 to lead by one shot after the first round of the Deutshe Bank Open at St Leon-Rot.

Cejka leads by one from the New Zealander Greg Turner, and by two from Scotland’s Colin Montgomerie.

Of the bigger names further down the field favourite Tiger Woods is five shots off the lead on three-under par, after a first round 69.

Cejka kicked off his round with a birdie at the first hole, and two further birdies at the sixth and seventh holes paved the way for his splendid effort.

Three more birdies put him into second place, and when superb putting gave him birdies at the 16th and 17th Cejka took the tournament lead for the first time.

Starting out at the tenth, Turner played sparkling golf from the start and made five birdies in his first nine holes.

With his confidence high he then blasted four successive birdies from the first hole to move clear at nine-under par.

His round was then sadly blotted at the fifth hole, when poor driving put him in trouble and he struggled to a double bogey six.

Two shots behind Turner are a big group of players, including the Argentine Eduardo Romero, who led for much of the earlier part of the day.

Alongside him are South Africans Darren Fichardt, Trevor Immelman, Scot Raymond Russell, Norwegian Henrik Bjornstad and Ulsterman Darren Clarke.
