Fraser beats Wiegele in playoff

Australia's Marcus Fraser made par on the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Austria's Martin Wiegele and win the BMW Russian Open.

Fraser and Wiegele entered the final round tied and each shot a 4-under 68 to finish at 19-under 269 at Le Meridien Golf and Country Club.

Sweden's Peter Hanson shot a 6-under 66 and finished third at 16-under 272.

Wiegele held the lead until he bogeyed No. 16 and dropped into a tie with Fraser. On the 18th, Wiegele missed a 50-foot birdie putt by an inch.

The players returned to the 18th hole for the playoff and both made birdie. They played the 18th again, and Wiegele made a bogey, while Fraser made a par for his first European Tour title.

"It was the most pressure I have ever played under," said the 25-year-old Fraser, who earned $75,450 and an immediate promotion from the European Challenge Tour to the European Tour.
