Saturday's play washed out

The third round of the John Deere Classic was postponed by rain, and tournament officials hope to complete the event by playing 36 holes Sunday.

Several groups were on the course when play was suspended Friday. They finished their second rounds Saturday morning and then play was postponed for the day after more than a half-inch of rain fell and up to another inch was forecast for later in the day.

Tournament officials adjusted the cut line from 1 over to even par Saturday, trimming the field to 66 for the final rounds.

J.L. Lewis , whose only PGA Tour win came at the 1999 John Deere Classic, is at 12-under 130 after back-to-back 65s, two strokes ahead of Jonathan Byrd .

Vijay Singh is third at 8 under, and Chris Riley and Paul Stankowski are five shots back at 7 under.

Defending champion J.P. Hayes was among the players left out of the final rounds when the cut line was changed.

Rain also fell through the morning Friday, and an afternoon downpour suspended play for 35 minutes.

Tournament officials hope to complete the 72-hole event on Sunday, but play will extend into Monday if necessary, tournament director Clair Peterson said.

"It's going to have to be a perfect scenario," Peterson said. "There is enough daylight. The question is when does the system quit dumping rain on us."

The last PGA Tour event to finish with 36 holes on Sunday was the 2001 BellSouth Classic in Duluth, Ga.
