Big names fail to make the cut

World number three Davis Love III and title holder Rich Beem were among several high-profile casualties of the halfway cut after the second round of the U.S. PGA Championship at Oak Hill on Friday.

Love (75) missed the cut by one stroke on 149, nine over. Beem followed up his woeful first-round 82 with a 75 to finish 17 over on 157.

The list of casualties is a testament to the difficulty of the golf course, which was designed by Scotland's Donald Ross and opened in 1924.

Spain's Sergio Garcia, Britain's Darren Clarke, Australia's Greg Norman, British Open runner-up Thomas Bjorn of Denmark and 1993 U.S. PGA champion Paul Azinger also failed to beat the halfway guillotine.

Others who missed out were Tom Watson, 2001 U.S. Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa, twice former major winner John Daly, British Open champion Ben Curtis, 1997 British Open winner Justin Leonard, 1988 U.S. PGA champion Jeff Sluman, Colin Montgomerie and Brad Faxon.

When the U.S PGA Championship was last held at Oak Hill in 1980, the cut was made at nine over. Jack Nicklaus won the title that year by seven shots.
