Herron leads after more rain delays

Tim Herron shot a 7-under 65 Friday and his 10-under total gave him the clubhouse lead Friday in the rain-delayed second round of the Reno-Tahoe Open.

Herron, seeking his first win on the PGA Tour in four years, was one stroke ahead of Craig Barlow, a native Nevadan who also had a second-round 65 at Montreux Golf and Country Club.

About half of the 132-player field was unable to complete their second round Friday, including Kirk Triplett, who was 8 under after getting birdies on the only three holes he played before darkness stopped play on the edge of the Sierra Nevada.

Triplett, who played his college golf at the University of Nevada, Reno, and 64 others will finish their second rounds Saturday morning before the cut is set and third-round play begins.

Guy Boros, the son of former golf great Julius Boros, shot a 66 and David Sutherland had a 67 and they were tied at 7-under 137. Rookie Nick Watney had a 66 and was another stroke back.

Herron, who has three top-10 finishes this year and ranks 40th on the money list with $1.15 million, had four birdies on the front nine of his bogey-free round.

"I haven't had a bogey all week," said Herron, who tied for 14th last week at the PGA Championship.

"After last week, I started scoring well ... I've got to keep it going. I've got to still make a lot of birdies," he said, predicting it would take 18 or 20 under to win the $3 million Tournament.

Barlow, 31, who was an all-state tennis player in high school and lives outside Las Vegas in Henderson, had seven birdies in a bogey-free round. He has won $1.6 million in five years on the Tour but is still seeking his first win.

He only got one hole in before a thunderstorm hit Thursday, so he had to play 35 holes on Friday.

"It was a very long day. But the longer the day went on, the better I started to play," said Barlow, who birdied three of his last four holes.

Herron and Boros played 32 holes on Friday.

"That's a long way for me," said Boros, 39, who used to caddy for his father. He said he thinks he has a shot at claiming his second career victory on the Tour.

"I don't see why not. I'm in pretty good position right now. My confidence is pretty good and I'm hitting it solid," he said.

Herron birdied three of the first five holes of the second round, dropping putts of 16, 3 and 5 feet. His 5-foot birdie attempt lipped out on the par-4 sixth, then he dodged a variety of trouble over the next three holes.

He hit out of a greenside bunker and saved par from 10 feet on the par-3, 220-yard seventh and saved par from 7 feet after his approach out of heavy rough came up 20 yards short of the green on the par-4, 464-yard eighth.

His drive on No. 9 was wide left in the rough, but kicked off a hill into the fairway. He also pulled his second shot left into the pine trees, but it too kicked onto the cart path and he chipped to 25 feet before converting the birdie.

John Daly withdrew Friday after shooting a 74 in the opening round.
