Owen & Green lead
as Montgomerie misses cut
Colin Montgomerie missed his second straight cut Friday as England's Greg Owen
and Australia's Richard Green moved into a tie for the lead after two rounds of
the British Masters.
Montgomerie shot a 3-over-par 75 for a two-round total of 148 and missed the
cut by four strokes, the first time in five years he missed consecutive cuts in
events in Europe.
Montgomerie, who missed five of six cuts in stroke-play events on the PGA Tour
earlier this year, said he was heading home to practice before traveling to Chicago
for next week's U.S. Open.
"I'm just not playing that well," said Montgomerie, who finished
second in the U.S. Open in 1994 and '97. "I'm not striking the ball properly;
I haven't got my length. I'll turn it around eventually, but whether I can turn
it around for next week, I'm not sure.
"The putting has been disappointing this year ... I had no birdies today,
so I'm struggling. I'm not making the birdies to counter the mistakes."
Owen, who has gone 68 holes without a bogey, shot a second straight 4-under
68. Green, whose round included an eagle and three straight birdies, had a round
66. They are tied at 8-under 136 total.
David Lynn and Marcel Siem each shot a 71 and were one stroke off the lead.
