Kite moves two shots clear
Tom Kite shot a 5-under 67 and took the lead after two rounds at the Turtle Bay Championship on Saturday.
Jan Stephenson, the first woman to play on the Champions Tour, shot a 12-over 84 to place her 26 strokes behind Kite -- at 20-over 164. She's 79th in the 80-player field, ahead of only 60-year-old Bobby Mitchell.
Kite, who has earned $1.4 million this year on the tour but has no tournament wins, had four birdies on the back nine to put him at 6-under 138. He entered the day three strokes behind co-leaders Dana Quigley, Hale Irwin and Rex Caldwell.
"I've been playing well and I'm starting to make some putts," Kite said. "I really feel like my putting stroke is very, very good -- very solid. I know exactly what I'm trying to do. There's just a question of whether I do it or not."
Caldwell shot a 70, and was in second place at 140. Irwin and Quigley each shot 71s to tie for third at 141. Joe Inman was at 142, and Ed Fiori finished at 143.
Stephenson, who won 16 tournaments -- including three majors -- during her LPGA Tour career, had an 8-over 80 in the opening round and things didn't go any better on Saturday.
Chi Chi Rodriguez withdrew after shooting a 75 the day after shooting an 80 to fall 17 strokes behind Kite.
